Vienna in the 17th & 18th Centuries

Haydn arrived in Vienna in 1790 shortly after the death of his Prince, Nicolaus Esterházy. By the end of that year he had been whisked off to London by the impresario Johann Peter Salomon. On his return from a second trip to London he settled permanently in Vienna as a culture-hero. Before that time Viennese taste had followed its own course, Haydn's influence being but modest at best. Join us for 17th century music à quattro as well as quartets by Haydn's illustrious predecessors and contemporaries in Vienna, including Antonio Bertali, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, Johann Joseph Fux, and, of course, Joseph Haydn himself.
